The ask. Nerdverse Nation wanted a physical object that could carry a digital membership — something a fan wears that also opens the door to livestreams, private communities, and member content. Merch that does something. The design language was sci-fi communicator: instantly readable to their audience without being a copy of anything.

The problem underneath it. A badge with a chip in it is easy to describe and awkward to build. NFC needs an unobstructed read path and a specific distance from the phone; the antenna doesn’t like being buried in dense material. The chip has to survive being worn — bent, dropped, sat on — while staying invisible, because visible hardware breaks the illusion the product is selling. And all of it has to fit in something small enough to wear on a shirt.

The build. A 3D printed badge with the NFC token embedded in the print itself, so the electronics sit inside the geometry rather than glued to the back of it. The print pauses mid-job, the token drops into a cavity sized for it, and the print closes over the top — the chip ends up encapsulated at a controlled depth tuned for reliable phone reads, with no seam, adhesive, or visible hardware. Tap it and it works. Nothing about the outside of the object tells you why.

Attachment is magnetic rather than pinned. The badge holds to a shirt through the fabric, comes off in one motion for a tap, and goes back on without hunting for a pin hole or leaving one behind. That matters more than it sounds: a tap-to-connect product that requires unpinning and repinning every time defeats itself.

The two systems had to share a very small object without interfering. The magnets sits far enough outside its field that reads stay clean — a placement constraint that drove the internal layout from the start. Testing so far shows no degradation in read performance.

The result is a working prototype the client can hold, hand to a partner, and shoot for a launch video — not a render, not a mockup. It’s now the first official piece of Nerdverse Nation membership hardware.
